Chapter Six

The following morning, Sparrow was sitting in Pheasant Run Café when he spotted Jack Frost coming into the diner. Barry Sliman was alone as he took a seat at the counter.

Although he didn't know the man, that niggling feeling returned. Sparrow couldn’t figure out why he kept getting a bad feeling around this guy. Somehow, he knew the man was more dangerous than Devil had ever been.

Barry ran with the crew down at the trailer park, but there was something different about this one.

The waiter walked over to Sparrow's table, turning up the carafe and filling his coffee mug to the brim once more. He smiled, but Sparrow only had eyes for the man at the counter who was ordering breakfast.

“Is there anything else I can get for you, Sheriff?” the waiter asked. He set the carafe down and tore Sparrow's order from his pad, setting it on the table.

“Two dozen donuts to take into the station,” Sparrow answered as he finished off his breakfast. The waiter smiled, nodded, and headed back over to the counter.

As he took a drink of his coffee, Sparrow watched two men walk into the diner. They were unfamiliar to him and Sparrow pretty much knew every resident in Bear County.

One had a thin jacket on with the hood pulled over his head. His eyes were scanning the place as if he had seconds to mesmerize the diner interior. Something wasn’t right. The other guy seemed cocky, confident as he walked up to the counter, his eyes fixated on the waiter.

In one quick motion, the confident man pulled out a gun and aimed it at the waiter as the jittery man pulled one as well, aiming it directly at Sparrow. “Not one fucking move, cop.”

They had to be morons. There was no other explanation for these two robbing a diner when a sheriff was sitting at one of the booths. Sparrow looked at Barry to gauge the man’s reaction. Was he a part of this or was it just coincidence that he’d come in moments before the robbers?

“Empty the register,” the confident man yelled at the waiter. “And then take me to the safe.”

“W–we don’t have a safe,” the waiter answered.

Sparrow jerked in his seat when the robber slammed the butt of his gun into the waiter’s head. The guy went down hard. A woman screamed as a baby started crying.

“Leave him the hell alone!” Sparrow shouted too late.

The cocky son of a bitch walked into the kitchen and came back with the cook, shoving the guy into a seat before he went back to the register.

The one holding a gun on Sparrow was a little too nervous. His hand was shaking and Sparrow was afraid the guy would accidently shoot him. He had to take back this situation before anyone else was hurt.

There were plenty of drug users over in the trailer park and Sparrow had a feeling these two were looking for some cash for their next fix. If they had been professionals, they would have robbed the bank, not a damn diner.
